HOME…LINGERIE……ABOUT…CONTACT….LOCATIONS CHADWICKS OF LONDON FOUNDERS I guess you could say the lingerie business is in Michael Chadwick’s blood. His grandfather started a lingerie shop in London in 1890, and Michael’s father and brother continued in the business as wholesalers to boutiques.
But Michael took a detour. After earning a degree in Sociology from London University, a Master’s in Sociology from the University of East Anglia, and a teaching credential from Oxford, he practiced as a psychotherapist and specialized in Bioenergetics and Gestalt therapy.
On a lark, Michael and his wife Shelley first traveled to the United States in 1985. They were so charmed by America, and particularly the Bay Area, that they stayed on, with Michael working as a psychologist and sociology lecturer and Shelly as a youth worker. After two years as director of an alternative junior high school in Berkelely, Michael got his green card. In 1987 the Chadwicks went back to England, packed up and moved, lock, stock and barrel, to America.
Initially Michael and Shelly stayed in Concord and sold thermal underwear made of fine English fabric at local flee markets. When they decided it was time to find a permanent home and possibly a shop, they came to Marin and discovered Mill Valley. “We were absolutely enchanted.” said Michael. “Mill Valley has a special feeling, very like a village, which we love.”
Shelley and Michael opened the Mill Valley shop in 1988. “ A charming space had become available, and there was no lingerie shop in the village at the time, so we filled a need.” Chadwick’s strives to appeal to all types of people. We started with small inventory, and people kept coming back, which helped us to grow our business.” The Chadwicks opened their second shop in San Anselmo in 1993.
